Been very good to me.

Did my research and people couldnt tell the difference from the Emperor 400. So i bought this since it's price tag was way cheaper than the 400. Ive been running this for about 2 months on my 75 gallon tank. I have an Oscar and they're messy eaters and leave particles in the water from some certain types of foods. The particles dissapear after 20 minutes due to the power filter's water gallon suction ratio. I completely love how silent it is. You need to fill the tank up to at least the waterfall lips of the filter so you wont hear the water splashing. Good good stuff here.

Easy Baby

Have to disagree with the other reviewer here ... I purchased a Baby biOrb recently for my new Betta after having my first betta living in an airless bowl for a couple years. I simply got tired of cleaning a stinky bowl every week. As a result I went shoppin for a new tank with a bubbler and filter system and found the Baby biOrb.



While I agree that the maintence costs are significant at $132/ year (if you need to change a filter every 4 weeks) the costs balance with ease of maintenance. Personally my experience with cleaning the Baby biOrb was a snap with the optional suction hose. Took me fifteen minutes to clean the tank drain the grimey water and add new water. Couldn't have been much easier. And I am not sure how anyone could have a problem swapping filter cartriges unless they have motor skills issues.



I also built a noise dampening box for the air pump - my only real complaint is that the "whisper quiet" pump sounds like a mini jackhammer after about five minutes.

Compared to PetsMart this should save you a few dollars. Also don't be so quick to throw these guys away with the Eclipse tanks. We've noticed that the tanks filtration system has a pretty solid vacuum so you'll notice that these cartridges will get dirty after about 4-5 days. Don't worry because it's just the top layer. Pull the cartridge out and scrub the surface with a new toothbrush from your dentist. You know? The cheap ones they give you after you've paid for a teeth cleaning. This should get you a few extra days.More detail ...

Great - but a warning

The Penguin Bio-wheel pumps are great: quiet effective and long-lasting. (I have a 170 filter in a 39 gallon tank.) These size C filters are widely available but the Amazon price is much lower than at my not-so-nearby pet store.



A word of warning. The day after changing my filter three months ago fish started dying. Next morning my 6" long Plecostomus was dead. Then three Clown Loaches each about 5 " long. Within a week I had lost 18 of my 20 fish. Yet there was no sign of disease.



A water test and much internet searching finally pointed out what I had done wrong. I had neglected my tank for a few weeks. In a rush to catch up I siphoned out about 30 percent of the water (more than usual) did a "better" than usual job of siphoning up detritus from the gravel. Then - my biggest mistake - I replaced the Penguin filter too! The result is the water chemistry changed too quickly. The Nitrates spiked to a deadly level. My tank healthy for more than two years needed to be started over. Took two months and many water changes before I could safely add new fish.



I visited perhaps a dozen "fish forums" and only one had a comment saying "don't change filters when you do a water change.' The Penguin filters and the box they come in carry no warnings. What I (and you) should do is simple: space your water changes and filter changes a week or two apart.



Now knowing how important the "aged" filter is (especially in a tank like mine with no under gravel filter) I've started this habit: there's just enough space to get a second filter flat against the old filter. After a couple of weeks I remove the older filter and put the newer one - by now doing some biological filtering - in its place. That way the tank is never depending on only a new filter. For larger tanks (say 55 gal and up) the 330 or 350 Penguin pump holds two filters side by side so just change one filter at a time.
